Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.
People who participate in volunteer work and recreational activities later
in life are less likely to suff er from physical, cognitive, mental or emotional
problems, according to a new study conducted by the University of
Toronto. Researchers followed 7,000 middle-aged and older Canadians
to understand if a higher rate of social interaction was associated with
a better quality of life.
The research only included participants who were successfully aging at
the start of the study. The study defined successful aging as freedom from
any serious physical, cognitive, mental, or emotional conditions that
prevent daily activities. The researchers said they documented how many
maintained their good health over the three years. The findings indicated
that respondents who participated in recreational activities and volunteer
or charity work were 15 % and 17 % more likely to maintain excellent
health.
Overall, feeling connected and socially engaged can boost our mood,
reduce our sense of loneliness and isolation, and improve our overall
health.
