Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.
The majority of an atom is actually just empty space, with electrons occupying only a small portion of it. To illustrate the scale, imagine that atoms is a large football stadium while the nucleus is pea, located at the centre of the pitch. Historically, atoms were believed to be the smallest possible units of matter due to their theoretical nature. Even the word «atom» originated from the Greek word meaning "not-cut". However, the discovery of electrons and later neutrons in 1932 opened up new areas of research. Moreover, scientists succeeded in splitting atom to tinier units known as quarks with names such as charm and strangeness, which come in different flavors rather than shapes and sizes. Despite these discoveries, understanding the true nature of matter remained unclear.
