A Maryland man almost threw away a $100,000 lottery ticket. The 73-year-old Dundalk man told Maryland Lottery officials that he had recently bought several tickets. One was a $10 winner and the rest, including the $100,000 winner, appeared to win nothing. He said he nearly threw the tickets away, but decided to double-check them using a scanner at a local store. The man was so shocked to learn the ticket was a big winner that the store clerk had to remind him to remain calm and breathe. The winner said he plans to use his winnings to pay off some bills. D. The graduation ceremony at New Jersey’s Seton Hall University featured a diploma being presented to one very special graduate: a student’s service dog. A video posted by the university shows Grace Mariani and her service dog, Justin, being presented with diplomas by Seton Hall’s Joseph E. Nyre. Mariani received a bachelor’s of science in education degree, while Justin was presented with an honorary diploma for attending all of his owner’s classes. Mariani said she plans to teach elementary and special education, and Justin will remain by her side in her career. E. Chocolate company Russell Stover celebrated its 100th anniversary by assembling the world’s largest box of chocolates in Missouri. The Kansas City-based company created an oversized version of its classic copper box at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and filled it with massive chocolates, each weighing between 11 and 38 pounds. The box measures 30 feet, 4.5 inches wide and 15 feet, 5 inches tall. The finished box of chocolates weighed 5,616 pounds, breaking the Guinness World Record of 3,725 pounds, which was set by British chocolate company Thorntons in 2008. F.A mass wedding in Baran, India featured 2,143 couples getting married in under 6 hours. A registered trust called Shri Mahaveer Goshala Kalyan Sansthan organized the mass wedding, which included both Hindu and Muslim marriages. The event lasted less than 6 hours, breaking the world record for the most couples married in 12 hours and the most couples married in 24 hours. The trust presented each couple with gifts including jewelry, a mattress with bedding, kitchen utensils, a television and a refrigerator. Officials said the goal of the event was to help underprivileged couples get married and start their lives together. G. Marine rescuers in England said a paddleboarder came to the assistance of three men who drifted out to sea on an inflatable duck. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Appledore station said volunteers were conducting training exercises Tuesday when they received word that three men who had floated away from Westward Ho! Beach on a giant inflatable duck. “With the strong tides and offshore breezes of the Bristol Channel, Appledore RNLI urges people never to take an inflatable toy into the sea. There is no way to control these and they get pulled out from shore within seconds,” the RNLI said. |
