1. Celebrating traditions
2. Paper wonders 3. A dinosaur for sale 4. Faster than ever 5. A winged traveller 6. Robotic cuisine 7. A computer for cooking 8. White, milk, or black? | A.A 3-year-old Macaw parrot who became spooked and flew away from his New Zealand home was spotted nine days later — and 155 miles away. Hamish and Lulu Peterson said they have raised the parrot, named Pablo and they trained him as a free-flying bird, allowing him to wander around the community and respond to whistles from his owners. The couple said Pablo fled the area nine days ago when he was spooked by a neighbor. The Petersons and their son, Kaleb, have now travelled 155 miles to East Auckland after numerous reported Pablo sightings in the area. B. A common claim states that a sheet of paper cannot be folded in half more than seven times. But is this true? How many times can you fold a piece of paper? In 2002, Britney Gallivan, then a junior in high school in California, folded a single piece of paper in half 12 times. She currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most times to fold a sheet of paper in half. She is the first person to ever fold paper in half nine, 10, 11 and 12 times. C. Chocolate is often sold according to how dark it is, with packaging touting a percentage say, 35 percent, 55 percent, 78 percent and so on that indicates the amount of cocoa powder solids and cocoa butter in the chocolate. The lower-percentage blends are closer to milk chocolate, while the higher-percentage blends are darker and less sweet. White chocolate, on the other hand, is not technically a chocolate at all it’s made without any cocoa powder or solids. White chocolate is just cocoa butter mixed with milk and sugar. D. A supercomputer named Frontier crunched numbers with mind- blowing speed this year: 1.1 quintillion operations per second. That makes the machine, run by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, the first exascale computer — a computer that can perform at least 1018 operations per second. The next fastest computer tops out at 442 quadrillion (that’s 1015) operations per second. Exascale computing is expected to lead to breakthroughs in everything from climate science to health to particle physics. E. India’s government-run animal welfare department has appealed to citizens to mark Valentine’s Day this year not as a celebration of romance but as “Cow Hug Day” to better promote Hindu values. The Animal Welfare Board of India said Wednesday that “hugging cows will bring emotional richness and increase individual and collective happiness.” Devout Hindus, who worship cows as holy, say the Western holiday goes against traditional Indian values. F.A Tyrannosaurus rex skull unearthed in South Dakota is expected to sell for $15 million or more at auction in New York next month, officials with Sotheby’s said Tuesday. The 200-pound (91-kilogram) skull fossil, nicknamed Maximus, is being sold by an owner who wishes to remain anonymous, the auction house said. The skull was excavated in 2020 and 2021 in Harding County, South Dakota, where other T. rex skeletons like Sue and Stan were found, according to Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s head of science and popular culture. G. Craving for gnocchi with lamb, black risotto or zucchini pasta? You can order any of them at a Croatian restaurant where a robotic chef is able to rustle up about 70 different one pot meals. Its owners say they believe the BOTS&POTS Sci-Food bistro in Zagreb is the world’s only restaurant where ready-to-eat meals in a pot are made by robotic cookers with no human involvement other than loading the devices with fresh ingredients. The devices add oil and seasoning according to digital recipes made by a human chef. |
