A. Arguably the first mainstream war-based board game, the aim of Risk is to take over the world. During your turn, you use your myriad of army units to attack other players, take over territories and fortify your existing ones. Risk will definitely give your brain a work out because it’s all about strategy. It also builds your logical thinking and decision-making skills because everything you do has consequences.
B. In 1904 a woman named Lizzie Magie received a patent for a Monopoly-like game she had invented. Her Landlord's Game consisted of a square board with nine rectangular spaces on each side. The players had to circle around the board, buying properties and railroads and paying rent. There were even two corners with instructions to "Go to Jail" or go to the "Public Park".
C. In the United States, the property with the highest rent is Boardwalk, which is named for a street in Atlantic City. But if you're playing the Spanish version of the game, the highest-rent property is Paseo de Prado, named for a street in Madrid. And in France, the most expensive place to rent is the Rue de la Paix, a Parisian street.
D. The British secret service wanted to find a way to smuggle maps to British POWS in German camps. The Nazis would often accept humanitarian aid packages for prisoners. The secret service took advantage of this opening and slipped special versions of Monopoly into POW camps. These Monopoly boxes contained regular games pieces and a number of escape supplies, including a metal file, compass, silk escape map and even some real money mixed in with the play money.
E. The game can be played by from two to six people. Each player is represented by a small metal token that is moved around the board according to the roll of two dice. Monopoly's metal tokens originated when Charles Darrow's niece suggested using charms from a charm bracelet as tokens. Tokens include a battleship, an iron, a race car, a Scottie dog, a shoe, a thimble, a top hat and a wheelbarrow.
F. Most modern board games have abandoned the traditional model of one dice being rolled for each turn and some even incorporate smart phone apps into the activities. Instead of rolling the dice, moving to a location and doing what the board tells you, there are a lot of games now where you are in control of your destiny, and that often makes it a much more enjoyable experience. So the game is never the same.
G. In this day and age of smartphones and iPads, more and more people are now investing hours of their time into an old family favorite: board games. Twentysomethings are leading a new generation of gamers – without consoles, Xboxes or even a screen. They play old-fashioned board games that many predicted would be consigned to history by computer games, flocking to board game cafes.
