A. On-line education allows students to choose from a wide variety of schools and programs not available in their area. Maybe you live by colleges that don’t offer the major you are interested in. Perhaps you live in a rural area, far from any college. On-line education can give you access to hundreds of quality accredited programs without the need for a big move.

B. On-line education offers flexibility for students who have other commitments. Whether you’re a busy stay-at-home parent or a professional that simply doesn’t have any time to take a course during school hours, you can find an online program that works around your schedule. Asynchronous options allow students the opportunity to learn without a set weekly schedule or on-line meetings at a specific time.

C. Students enrolled in on-line education programs network with peers from all over the nation. Learning on-line doesn’t have to be isolating. In fact, students should make the most out of their courses by networking with their peers. Not only can you make friends, you can also develop excellent references and connect with people who can later help you to find a career in your shared field.

D. Many on-line education programs allow pupils to work at their own pace. Some students don’t mind following the pace of a traditional course with the rest of the students. But, others become frustrated as they feel bored with slow-moving instruction or feel overwhelmed with material that they don't have time to understand. If working at your own pace is important to you, look for on-line programs that offer flexible start and finish dates.

E. When choosing an on-line education program, you’ll need to decide between synchronous courses and asynchronous courses. Students taking on-line education courses synchronously are required to log on to their courses at the same time as their professors and peers. Students taking on-line education courses asynchronously may log on to the course website whenever they choose and do not have to participate in discussions or lectures at the same time as their peers.

F. While most people learn by listening to lectures and taking notes, the majority of distance learners are expected to master material through reading alone. Although some distance learning courses offer video recordings and audio clips, most programs require that students understand a large amount of information that is only available through written text. These students are able to comprehend texts at the college level without the direct guidance of a teacher.

G. Sure, ‘virtual people’ may be hard to connect with, but making an effort to actually get to know your classmates can be rewarding. If you find students from your area, consider a physical study group at a restraint or bookstore. If not, try to create an on-line support group of peers. They’ll appreciate having someone to keep them on track in their work and you’ll reap the benefits of being accountable as well.
